One SEC Program Will Likely Start Backup QB Week Four

AUSTIN, Texas — There’s good news and bad news for the Longhorns this week with the abdominal injury to Quinn Ewers.

The bad news is Ewers will likely miss Texas’ home matchup with UL-Monroe next week, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

Good news is the Longhorns have a very capable backup quarterback from the legendary Manning family.

Ewers, an early season Heisman candidate, suffered a strain to his abdomen Saturday at home against UT-San Antonio which allowed Arch Manning to receive snaps for the remainder of the contest. Manning wowed those in attendance at DKR Texas Stadium flashing his arm and legs in the final three stanzas.

He finished 9-of-12 passing for 223 yards and four touchdowns while tacking on another 53 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Manning displayed speed similar to his father Cooper, with a 63 yard touchdown.

True freshman 5-star receiver Ryan Wingo found himself so wide open that Manning underthrew it a bit. However, Wingo maintained his footing to score his first touchdown as a Longhorn from 75-yards out.

“You never know, as a backup, when you’re going to get put in the game,” Sarkisian said. “For [Manning] to come in on his first play to hit DeAndre Moore for the touchdown. On his third play — we’re in a little different style of offense when he’s in there — the little zone read, to pull it and the explosive play.”

This will be the third straight season which Ewers has suffered some sort of injury and missed time. While other Longhorns backup quarterbacks haven’t stuck around long, Manning is the exception so far and will gain valuable experience if Ewers is truly ‘week-to-week’ in recovery.
